Pick wood - you should know that

If old paint on the wood just peel off, you should renew it as soon as possible. But before you have to remove old layers of paint, pickling can be a good option. What you should pay attention to and what you should know when pickling, read here.

Basic operation of strippers

Paint remover is available for different materials. Not only wood, but also metal can be pickled. A paint stripper dissolves the existing paint layers so that they can easily be removed mechanically afterwards.

With no paint removal on mechanical way so it goes with the paint stripper not synonymous. You should first consider whether you actually want to pickle the wood workpiece or grind possibly enough.

Always use suitable paint strippers

Not every paint stripper is suitable for every material and for all layers of paint. The paint stripper used must always match the substrate as well as the type of paint layers.

Pay attention to protective equipment

Paint strippers are dangerous chemicals. Accordingly, one should be careful in dealing with them. As protective equipment are absolutely recommended to:

  • safety goggles
  • gloves
  • long-sleeved clothing
  • Dust mask for subsequent grinding

Be sure to ensure adequate ventilation, or work in the same outdoor area! Never leave the scrubber unattended near children and keep children away from work as far as possible.

For a paint stripper to work properly, it must be applied in sufficient thickness. The job should be at least 1 mm thick.

Correct removal

After the exposure time, the softened paint residues must be expertly removed. This can be done either with a spatula and hot air, or with a brass brush.

Be sure to thoroughly rinse any chipped woodwork with water when the paint remains are removed.

Allow enough rocking

After rinsing, each wood must be allowed to dry out for at least 2 - 3 days before further processing.

After the drying process you should always sand down pickled wood thoroughly.

Tips & Tricks

An alternative to removing thick and sticky layers of paint can also be planing with an electric planer. If a very thin cut is set (0.5 mm) and you have some skill, the easiest way to remove paint layers from flat surfaces.
