Fill wooden surfaces: different materials

Outbreaks and quirks in the wood can be refilled with different fillers. It is important to find the right material, which forms a good connection to the substrate, can be easily smoothed and melts in color with the wood-facing surface. We shed light on the various options and thus provide guidance.

Which properties does your filler need?

Heavily stressed surfaces must be filled with a robust material that can withstand numerous mechanical stresses. This usually does not depend on the color of the filler, since in most cases it will be painted over anyway.

Small outbreaks of decorative objects or little used furniture, which also receive no colored coating, require a completely different filler material. Historic wooden objects, on the other hand, need to be restored with particular care; additions should be removable later.

Although wide cracks in the wood can be easily closed, they always tear open again if you choose the wrong filling technique. These different requirements require that tradesmen resort to different fillers, depending on what is required.

Fill with wood: These materials are suitable

  • 2K wood filler: 2K means that the material consists of two components that must be mixed before processing. Such fillers are especially suitable for smoothing larger areas. The most important advantages: fast curing and low shrinkage.
  • 1K synthetic resin putty: Mixing is eliminated, the material consists of only one component. These fillers are particularly suitable for minor repairs on wooden surfaces, which are painted afterwards colored. If the ground remains woody, re-dyeing with a matching colored pencil is recommended.
  • Waxing wax: In the market, wax masses are available in various wood shades, which can be applied with the help of a hot spatula. They are suitable for color-accurate closing of small quirks and scratches.
  • Wood pulp solution: This material provides only the binder and solvent, adding the actual solid itself. Mixed with grinding powder, which corresponds in color to the surface to be cemented, this substance becomes an individual, quick-drying filler.
  • Hydroxypropylcellulose: Professional restorers like to use a substance known as Klucel®. This agent is also mixed with grinding dust and thus forms a wood-like mass, which can be removed again if necessary.
  • Wood repair putty: This was a special putty with strong adhesive power, which is also suitable for attaching window frames and windows. With this material, even deeper cracks can fill.

Bridge deep cracks with hemp fibers

Another way of trowelling deep cracks is to first bridge them with a flexible solid. For this, loose hemp fibers are used according to old tradition, filling the gap.

Of course, the cracks have to be filled afterwards, in some cases filling the gap with a mixture of hemp and putty is advisable. So you can be relatively sure that the crack does not come out again.

Tips & Tricks

Fillings should never dry too quickly, as this will cause unsightly cracks. So never blow dry a putty to accelerate the drying process and do not lay appropriate workpieces in the sun. Only patience will bring you to your destination!
