Wood beams permeable to diffusion or aerated plaster

Especially with half-timbered houses can be interesting for fashionable reasons or because of unsightly surfaces plastering wooden beams. The same applies to internal wooden beams, which should "disappear" for visual reasons. Generally, plastering is not a problem and special plaster nets bridge the wooden surfaces.

Cleaning nets as plaster carrier

If wooden beams form an indispensable support structure, but are not suitable as decorative objects, they can simply be placed under a plaster layer. Since in most cases plastered surfaces are located around the beams, a bridging of the beam webs is implemented as a common method of plastering.

After exposing the beams, plaster nets can be attached to the surfaces of the beams. Theoretically, thumbtacks are sufficient for fixation since the later plaster layer develops inherent stability as it dries out. If there are differences in depth between the beam and the surrounding masonry, a primer coat must fill the cavity. On the flat surface thus formed, a uniformly plastered wall is produced throughout.

Mechanical cleaning sufficient

The pretreatment of the beams requires much less effort than for the painting of beams. The treatment of wooden beams is limited to cleaning and roughening. Therefore, mechanical processing, which serve to expose the wooden beams, usually sufficient.

Classic exposure and pre-processing can be done by brushing or sandblasting. The most important result is the removal of all loose parts. Attention should be paid to any composite materials that are inserted between masonry and beams. They must not be damaged.

Diffusibility and corrosion

As a type of plaster impermeable products should be chosen. In particular with colored renders, the accompanying color pigments or agents can reduce the ability of the plaster to diffuse. The advice of a professional is recommended to avoid later sweating of the bars. Special plaster fans can provide additional ventilation of the plastered beams.

If there are metal parts on the beams, such as ornamental screws or retaining clips, care must be taken to ensure freedom from cement, especially in the case of the under-plaster, in order to prevent corrosion under plaster.

Tips & Tricks

Do not use quick dry plasters. Their fast curing can lead to stress on the beams, which can not cope with the physical change in the force. This can cause cracks and crevices in the wooden beam.
