Fighting a woodworm with alcohol requires patience and time

Among the various home remedies used in combating woodworm, alcohol is always listed. Undoubtedly, he is deadly on the larvae and insects of the common Nagekäfer. However, it must be weighed whether the odor nuisance is tolerable by the Vergällen at the place of use.

Intense odor persists for a long time

In the interior and in furniture alcohol precipitates as a control against woodworm. The ethanol alcohol is denatured, in which odors are added to distinguish it from potable alcohol. Despite the relatively high volatility, these additives can obtain their strong odor of evaporation up to weeks.

Outside, on facades, fences and garden facilities, alcohol is an effective way to dislodge the woodworm. Due to its lower risk of explosion compared to isopropanol and higher penetration power to vinegar this home remedy is well suited.

The affected wood must be checked to see if the fibers and the substance of alcohol remain undamaged. As possibly better tolerated alternatives, the following home remedies can also be tested:

  • boron salt
  • petroleum
  • sal ammoniac
  • turpentine

Similar to petroleum and turpentine, the flammability and toxicity of the exhalations is a defining aspect of processing. In order to achieve volatilization spray and processability, alcohol must be mixed with water.

How to combat woodworm with alcohol

  • Methylated spirits (also ethanol, ethyl alcohol or spirit of wine)
  • water
  • Syringe and cannula (max 1 mm)
  • Respiratory and eye protection
  • Protective gloves
  • chalk
  • Camera / Smartphone

1. Assess workplace

Locate all holes in the wooden surfaces and mark the areas. You must record all holes, work off individually and mark accordingly. Take a picture of the surfaces.

2. Plan workload

Calculate with the injection of alcohol between 100 and 200 holes per hour.

3. Protection and safety

Work with respiratory and eye protection and gloves. Watch for evaporation in the right direction. When the outside temperature is below 25 degrees Celsius, shade the sun-shaded wooden parts.

4. Provide alcohol

Mix the spirit with water in the ratio of one to four or five. Store it in a sealed container. Plug a sponge onto the opening as a lid.

5. Pick up alcohol

Insert cannula onto the syringe. Pierce through the sponge and pull up the syringe. With a 100 ml syringe you can "vaccinate" three to five holes.

6. Apply markings

Mark the sprayed holes with a chalk swab each time the syringe is re-inflated.

7. Control

If you have removed the woodworm and all larvae have been eliminated, you will need to check on the flour content and / or a photo comparison after about four weeks.

Tips & Tricks

With alcohol you use a control agent that is more environmentally friendly and non-toxic than chemical agents, but at the same time can not be called a biological method. A list of options, sorted in ascending order of toxicity, will help you to determine the best exposure and efficacy ratio.
