Mill ytong

With a milling machine you can process many workpieces - practically as well as creatively. You can also mill ytong or gas or aerated concrete. Everything you need to know about milling Ytong is summarized below.

The milling of different materials

For a long time, milling was reserved for craftsmen. This has changed massively in recent years. In particular, the router has become increasingly popular with home improvement in recent years. Primarily the following materials are processed:

  • Wood and wood composites
  • metals
  • plastics

Milling requires expertise and expertise

How difficult the milling process can be can be seen when milling Plexiglas or acrylic glass. In addition to the milling of functional grooves, the creative artistic use of milling is spreading more and more. For example, here you can read about how to mill figures and letters. Overall, the milling requires expertise and, of course, experience.

Milling of cellular concrete (Ytong)

But not only the applications themselves have changed. Other materials are also increasingly being milled with a router. A typical example of this is Ytong. Before we go into more detail on Ytong milling, let's give you some preliminary information: Ytong is actually a brand name for aerated concrete or aerated concrete. However, the term "Ytong" has become colloquially synonymous with aerated concrete. Therefore, we use the term here as well.

Creative or functional milling of aerated concrete

First of all, when milling Ytong, a distinction has to be made as to whether a functional groove or a creative shape should be milled. According to these requirements, a router does not necessarily have to be used. If, for example, grooves are to be milled as cable or cable slots, you can also use a masonry tiller excellently.

You can borrow such a slot cutter for concrete on favorable terms at numerous DIY stores and at tool rental agencies by the hour or day. The milling of corresponding grooves works very fast. Keep in mind, however, that the amount of dust is correspondingly high, even when using a suction device.

Creative milling of Ytong with the router

In creative milling, however, the router is more likely to be used. The advantage of milling aerated concrete is that this artificial stone is very loose (hence the name aerated concrete). As a result, the milling is correspondingly easy. The router literally goes like "by butter". However, the same applies here: the dust development is extreme. If you want to machine a ytong stone with a milling cutter, you have to take appropriate measures because of the high amount of dust.

Tips & Tricks

You can mill the aerated concrete freehand, but also use milling templates or copying rings. The specialized trade offers different products, you can also produce a milling template yourself. You can read more about this under "Routing overlapping".
